FREEDOM FROM STRESS-MANAGMENT OF PIER ABUTMENT CASE
Keywords:
: Pier abutment, on –rigid connector, reverse orientation of key, key-wayAbstract
In a conventional 3 unit FPD the occlusal forces are transmitted through the connectors to the terminal retainers. In the case of a pier abutment requires special consideration as the middle abutment acts as a fulcrum which causes failure of the weaker retainer. Nonrigid connectors have been advocated for fixed partial dentures However; space limitations may require over reduction of the preparation or over contouring of the retainer to place the keyway within the retainer wall. The alternative orientation of the nonrigid connector reverses the key and keyway placement.
