Abstract

Purpose: The aim of our retrospective study was to determine the frequency and type of pathological changes related to impacted third molars. Indications and complications associated with impacted third molars removal are also discussed. Patients and methods: Over a period of six years, 8790 impacted third molars were removed in 7430 patients. Results: Of the total 783 specimens submitted for histopathological examination, 172 specimens (21.97%) were found as cystic lesion and 117 specimens (14.94%) were diagnosed as benign tumor. Conclusion: Our study confirmed that the incidence of pathologic conditions related to impact third molar is relatively low (3.28%). Surgical removal of impacted third molar should be performed in the presence of specific indications.
