Abstract

Rehabilitation of patients with maxillofacial defects is a difficult task. The denture fabrication for such a patient becomes extremely difficult due to the unavailability of attached keratinized supporting tissues. Mandibular resection leads to altered mandibular movements, disfigurement, difficulty in swallowing, impaired speech and articulation and deviation of the mandible towards the resected site. Pre-prosthetic plastic reconstructive surgery with or without implant therapy may improve denture retention and stability. Prosthetic rehabilitation alone, without plastic-surgical reconstruction for an edentulous patient who has undergone segmental mandibulectomy is a challenging task. Management of patients who require mandibular resection without bony reconstruction is difficult. This article describes the prosthetic management of a patient following segmental mandibular resection.
