Abstract

Background: Numerous techniques are used for inguinal hernia repair. These techniques can be divided into two main categories depending on whether or not a mesh is used. Aims: The purpose of this study is to analysis the clinical long-term result of these hernia repair techniques including meshplasty and Modified basini’s repair (anatomical repair). Material and Method: A 1500 cases was conducted among which 83.6% cases were operated with prolene mesh and 16.4% cases operated with modified basini’s repair. Result: Male and direct hernia are common and incidence of Hernia is increased with advancing age. The Non specific cause (Metabolic) 38.73% and chronic cough (smoking habit) 31.4% are most common precipitating factor for hernia formation. Any anesthesia can be used but Spinal Anesthesia is safer and less costly. Mean operative time and Hospital stay in both techniques remain approximately same. Among all post operative complication the scrotal swelling 16.46% and wound infection 10.26% are most common. The total recurrence rate is 1.86%, in Meshplasty it is 2.11% and in Modified Basini’s it is 1.5% which are very less. The per operative cost in modified basin’s repair is approximately Rs. 1200 – 1400 which is significant for poor class of patient in India. Conclusion: The hernia is most common disease in male and the Meshplasty is definitely more popular procedure being in use but in India where cost factor still play a part, Modified basini’s repair is equally effective to prevent complication like recurrence and neuralgia.
